    THE SHORT ANSWER: Zinc is one of the most heavily marketed supplements for immune support and cold season, and the evidence behind it is genuinely mixed. A 2024 Cochrane review pooling 34 studies found weak evidence that zinc treatment might shorten a cold by around two days, but the same review found prophylactic zinc did not meaningfully reduce how often people got sick in the first place, and zinc users reported significantly more side effects than placebo, including taste disturbances, nausea, and GI upset.     The bigger risk that gets skipped: copper deficiency

    Here's the piece that matters most for anyone taking zinc regularly rather than just during a cold. The NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements states directly that doses of 50 mg of zinc a day or more, sustained over a period of weeks, can inhibit copper absorption, reduce immune function, and lower HDL cholesterol. That's a real, mechanistically understood interaction, not a fringe concern. Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the gut, and chronically high zinc intake can push copper status down far enough to cause a genuine deficiency.

    Copper deficiency isn't a minor lab abnormality. It can cause anemia, low white blood cell counts, and in more severe or prolonged cases, neurological problems affecting the spinal cord. This tends to show up in people using zinc long-term at high doses, whether through supplements or, historically, denture creams containing zinc, without realizing copper status was ever part of the equation.
